Rapid clicking
Usually a weak or dead battery. The starter solenoid clicks but there isn't enough power to turn the engine. Lights may be dim.
One loud click
Often the starter motor or its solenoid, or a bad connection to the starter.
Corroded or loose battery terminals
White or green buildup on the terminals can block power even with a good battery.
What you can try
- Jump-start the car (follow the owner's manual)
- If it starts, have the battery and charging system tested — the alternator may not be charging
Batteries in hot climates
Heat is hard on batteries. In Southern California, three to five years is a typical battery life.
FAQ
If a jump-start works, is it the battery?
Often, but the alternator could also be failing to charge it. Have both tested.
