Steam or white vapor with a sweet smell
Usually coolant — a leaking hose or radiator, or overheating. Pull over and let the engine cool. Don't open the radiator cap while hot.
Blue-gray smoke
Burning oil. From under the hood, often an oil leak onto the hot exhaust. From the tailpipe, worn rings or valve seals.
Black smoke from the tailpipe
Too much fuel — injectors, sensors or air intake problems.
Thick white smoke from the tailpipe
Can indicate coolant entering the engine — possibly a head gasket.
Electrical smell or smoke
Turn off the engine and get out. Electrical fires spread fast.
When to tow
If you see flames, smell burning plastic, or the temperature gauge is in the red, don't keep driving.
